Authorization to Exceed the Case Compensation Maximum

Payments in Excess of CJA compensation maximums may be made to provide fair compensation in cases involving extended or complex representation when so certified by the court and approved by the chief judge of the circuit (or delegate). A case is complex if the factual or legal issues are unusual, thus requiring more time, skill, and effort than a typical case. A case is extended if more time is required than in the typical case.
