The Northern District of California District Court currently has two separate case management systems, PACER and ECF:

PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) is our older system which manages only older cases (Civil cases 01-01296 & below; Criminal cases prior to 03-99999 & below). PACER contains no case documents whatsoever, only docket sheets.

ECF (Electronic Case Filing) is our newer system and manages all newer cases (Civil case 01-01297 & above; Criminal case 04-00001 & above). ECF contains all docket sheets for these cases and many case documents, but note that not all cases in the ECF system are efiling cases, so not all case documents can be found online.

Written Opinions filed as of April 16, 2005 for cases in the PACER system will be found HERE.

Written Opinions filed as of April 16, 2005 for cases in the ECF system will be found HERE.

All other documents in cases not in the ECF system, and/or not in an efiling case, and/or filed only in paper (IE, not in PDF) can be found in hard-copy only at the court.
