Due to the ongoing COVID-19 (“Coronavirus Disease”) public health emergency, all essential in-person operations in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California (including mail delivery and in-person criminal proceedings) have been consolidated and relocated to the San Francisco Courthouse.  All other Northern District courthouses (Oakland, San Jose, and Eureka/McKinleyville) are closed entirely to the public.  All hearings will be held by telephone or video conference, and will be open to the press and public, to the extent practicable.  These protocols will remain in place until May 1, 2020, and may be extended by further order.  Please refer to the following General Orders:

GO 72: IN RE: Coronavirus Disease Public Health Emergency (adopted 03/16/2020)
GO 73: Temporary Restrictions on Courthouse Access; Consolidation of Operations in SF (amended 04/02/2020)
GO 74: Temporary Use of Teleconferencing in Criminal Matters Pursuant to CARES ACT (adopted 3/30/2020)
GO 75: Temporary Suspension of Rules Regarding Personal Service by USMS (adopted 3/30/2020)

Please note that for health and safety reasons, submission of paper filings to the San Francisco Courthouse (through US Mail, private carriers, or in person via drop box), is strongly discouraged.  Please first call (415) 522-2000 or email ECFHELPDESK@cand.uscourts.gov to arrange alternatives to paper filing.  Please also note that the San Francisco Courthouse’s drop box will be checked only once a week, on Thursdays, and that emergency filings should not be submitted through the drop box.
