Robert M. Illman Reappointed as U.S. Magistrate Judge
for the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California

The United States District Court for the Northern District of California announces the reappointment of Robert M. Illman as a full-time U.S. Magistrate Judge. Judge Illman has been reappointed to an eight-year term beginning November 6, 2025, following the expiration of his current term. His duty station will remain the Eureka-McKinleyville Courthouse.

Judge Illman was first appointed to the bench in 2017. Before his appointment, he served as a law clerk to Magistrate Judge Nandor J. Vadas (ret.) in the Northern District of California and to Chief Magistrate Judge Wallace Capel, Jr. (ret.) in the Middle District of Alabama. Earlier in his career, he worked as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in Montgomery, Alabama, representing indigent clients in federal trial and appellate courts, including individuals on Alabama’s death row in federal habeas corpus proceedings.

“Judge Illman is a highly respected and valued colleague and his reappointment is good news for the Northern District and the legal community we serve,” said Chief Judge Seeborg.

The Northern District of California currently has 13 full-time Magistrate Judge positions. Magistrate Judges preside over civil cases by party consent, conduct preliminary proceedings in criminal matters, handle misdemeanor cases, and manage various pretrial matters in civil litigation.

The Court congratulates Judge Illman on his reappointment and thanks him for his continued service.
